First contact with Rocky

Ryland Grace, the sole surviving human astronaut aboard the Hail Mary, makes first contact with an intelligent alien species when he discovers a second spacecraft—the Blip-A—alongside his own in the Tau Ceti system. After weeks of isolation, amnesia, and the grim discovery that his two crewmates died in their medically induced comas, Grace had been struggling to understand his mission. The sudden appearance of an alien ship, confirmed by a steady Petrova-frequency glow from its engines, shatters his solitude and transforms his suicide mission into a collaborative effort to save both Earth and the Eridian homeworld from the Astrophage plague.

Discovery and First Exchange

Grace first notices the Blip-A when the Petrovascope screen shows a steady light source that gradually brightens and then disappears. Switching to visible light, he sees a roughly triangle-shaped object with gable-like protrusions—clearly a fabricated spacecraft, not an asteroid. The ship is 139 meters long, three times the size of the Hail Mary, and its hull is made of flat panels, a design no human engineer would choose for a pressure vessel. Grace realizes this is an alien spacecraft, and the implications flood his mind: humanity is not alone, and he has just met their neighbors. He initiates communication by firing his own spin drive in a brief pulse, and the Blip-A responds by repeating the pattern within seconds—too fast for any remote-controlled probe, proving an intelligent life-form is aboard. Grace names the alien ship "Blip-A" and its occupant "Rocky."

The Cylinder and the Tunnel

Rocky's ship sends a small cylinder toward the Hail Mary at a gentle 8.6 centimeters per second—the same velocity Grace had used in his initial signal. Grace suits up for an EVA and catches the cylinder as it floats into his arms. The cylinder smells strongly of ammonia and is hot to the touch, indicating an alien environment far different from Earth's. Inside, Grace finds a star map model: a central sphere representing Tau Ceti connected by a thin filament to another sphere, which Grace identifies as 40 Eridani—Rocky's home system. The message is clear: "We are from 40 Eridani, and we are here at Tau Ceti for the same reason you are." Grace responds by soldering a wire from the Tau Ceti sphere to a sphere representing Sol, Earth's sun, and adding a crude wax model of a Petrova line. He sends the modified model back to the Blip-A. Rocky then sends a second cylinder containing a model of the two ships connected by a tube, indicating a desire to meet. Grace provides a sample of his hull by chiseling off a piece, and the Blip-A's hull robot catches it and waves back at him.

The Knock and the First Face-to-Face

Rocky constructs a tunnel connecting the two ships, using xenonite glue to attach it to the Hail Mary's airlock. The tunnel ends in a wall of forty hexagons, each made of a different xenonite compound. Grace hears three knocks from the other side and knocks back. One hexagon is clear, and through it he sees a three-fingered claw—Rocky's hand. The alien taps the clear hexagon, and Grace taps back. Rocky then holds up a tiny model of Grace's EVA suit and the Hail Mary, gesturing for Grace to return to his ship. When Grace comes back, the hex wall is gone, replaced by a clear barrier. On the other side stands Rocky himself: a pentagonally symmetrical creature about the size of a Labrador, with five legs radiating from a central carapace, each ending in a three-fingered hand. He wears a cloth covering on his carapace and moves with surprising grace in zero gravity. Rocky waves, and Grace waves back. Rocky then taps the clear wall and points to a collection of objects he has left for Grace: beaded models representing molecules. Grace realizes the beads are atoms—eight beads in a circle for oxygen, seven beads with three single-bead attachments for ammonia. Rocky is communicating their atmospheric compositions: Earth's oxygen and Erid's ammonia. Grace understands that they have incompatible environments but can communicate through sound and pantomime. This moment marks the beginning of a partnership that will save both their worlds.
